A sweet offering for short-film lovers: TataSky ShortsTV

Today, when both, attention spans and ‘free’ time are reducing drastically, it’s the time of  short-format everything. DTH and OTT platforms are constantly pushing for new, unique concepts and shows, and that quest now has Tata SKY bring us India’s first curated platform for short stories and films. In fact, for this first-of-its-kind service in Asia, Tata SKY has tied up with ShortsTV to provide around 600 hours of  short format stories on a single platform, accessible on the go on mobile app, and also through its STB on your TV set.

This offering on Tata SKY from ShortsTV, the world’s first and only 24/7 TV channel dedicated to short films, is called Tata Sky ShortsTV, and is available on Tata Sky Mobile App and on the STB on Channel #113 (SD) and #112 (HD). Also, on watch.tatasky.com.

It’s free for the first five days, and then 75 rupees a month. But it doesn’t say how many films will be available to watch from Day One – will it be the complete library, or will they trickle down the feed to ensure binge-watching doesn’t kill arpus from extended monthly subscriptions. One just hopes they don’t choke the flow, because one doesn’t just want to watch the good ones again, but also show them to family and friends. And with 2000 films across a 600-hour library, there’s a massive library.

Interestingly, Shorts TV have worked hard for more than a year to localize the proposition with more than 500 Indian short films.

Tata Sky-ShortsTV promises to be a smorgasbord of 2000 titles, including the best of Oscars, Cannes etcetera as well as a comprehensive collection of recent Indian short stories and films. Across  genres like comedy, drama, thriller, mystery, crime and adventure, and more.

One recalls the good choice of films and television series that Arun Unni, CCO of Tata Sky, had handpicked for another premium offering, WorldScreen. Tata Sky ShortsTV too promises to bring some great short films featuring acting mavens from across Hollywood and Bollywood such as Tom Hiddlestone, Judi Dench, Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Naseeruddin Shah, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, to name a few.

Some of the international finds include, among others, God of Love, Bear Story, Atlantic, Henry, Borrowed Time, Curfew, Blood Money, A Sense of History, Neighbours, Walls, Blue Season, Midnight of My Life and Picture Paris. Also Chutney, Ahalya, Shunyata, Aamad, Kheer, Arre Baba, Urmi’s Cat, Naughty Amelia Jane are some of the critically acclaimed films that will be available on the platform.

And one’s also watched a couple of promos of the Indian short films lined up. They’re well produced, shot, edited and performed, and should definitely catch on.

So this is definitely an interesting offering, one that most premium Tata Sky subscribers would want to sample and, one’s willing to bet, stick with.

After all, as Unni says about the Tata Sky ShortsTV offering, “As viewing habits evolve, short films have seen a huge surge in popularity across the world, including in India. Increasingly, prominent filmmakers and actors are using this creative medium to tell wonderful stories being watched by millions on the internet. However, there hasn’t been a single curated destination for the Indian consumer to watch this content. ‘Tata Sky ShortsTV’ aims to be that destination where a curated selection of 2000+ of the World’s best short films can be enjoyed on a 24*7 basis. We are proud to partner with “Shorts TV”, who have worked hard for more than a year to localize the proposition with 500+ Indian short films.”
