HBO with 11, Pop TV with 7-win Schitt’s Creek-sweep, rule Telecast wins at 72nd Emmys

image-72nd Emmy Award Winners HBO and Schitts Creek dominate MediaBriefWhile HBO won 11 awards in the Telecast section and Pop TV bagged 7, Netflix with 2 and VH1, FX Networks and Apple TV with 1 award each were the only other winners in the Telecast section at the 72nd Emmy Awards held virtually for the first time, and presented by Jimmy Kimmel. Check out all the winners.

Sans the star glamour that would have shone forth but for the missing red carpet since it was conducted virtually with the safest social distancing norms enforced, the 72nd Emmy Awards nevertheless was an eminently enjoyable event that witnessed history created with the highest number of coloured actors winning, HBO sweeping away 11 awards and for the first time ever, a comedy series (Schitt’s Creek) sweeping all seven comedy awards including for Daniel Levy, Catherine O Hara, Eugene Levy and Annie Murphy. Plus the youngest ever actress — 24-years-old Zendaya, also only the second coloured actress — to win the award for lead actress in a drama series (Euphoria).

Some other notable highs from when the Television Academy celebrated the 72nd Emmy® Awards to recognize excellence in primetime programming and individual achievement for the 2019-2020 television season, included singer-songwriter and GRAMMY®-winning artist H.E.R. making her Emmy® debut with a special “In Memoriam” performance.

Additionally, Emmys were awarded in 100 other categories at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards over four consecutive nights, Monday, Sept. 14, through Thursday, Sept. 17, with a fifth broadcast ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 19, on FXX.

The 72nd Emmy® Awards were broadcast live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on ABC, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and produced by Done+Dusted, Reginald Hudlin and KIMMELOT. The telecast featured awards in 23 Emmy categories, plus the Governors Award, presented by top talent from some of television’s most acclaimed programs.

Presenters and surprise guests included Anthony Anderson, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Ty Burrell, LaVerne Cox, America Ferrera, Morgan Freeman, Ilana Glazer, Abbi Jacobson, Ken Jeong, Mindy Kaling, Tatiana Maslany, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bob Newhart, D-Nice, Randall Park, Issa Rae, RuPaul, Jason Sudeikis, Gabrielle Union, Lena Waithe, J.J. Watt and Oprah Winfrey
